Our Mission

The Boston Society of Film Critics was formed in 1981 and exists to offer a unique critical perspective on film at a local, national and international level through annual awards that celebrate the year’s best in film, local commendations for filmmakers, film societies and theaters making notable contributions to Boston film culture, and other recognitions deemed appropriate.

The BSFC has dedicated past award proceedings in memory of members Robin Dougherty (2005) and David Brudnoy (2004) who passed before their time. The Best New Filmmaker Award was conceived and instituted in the memory of Mr. Brudnoy, a founding member of the BSFC, and longtime radio talk show host on WBZ radio.
