Join the BSFC

The Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) welcomes applications for new members each year. The next application period runs April 1-30, 2025.

Who Can Apply?

To be considered for membership, you must:

  • Be a working film critic, actively publishing reviews throughout the year.
  • Have at least six months of experience as a film critic, with reviews published at least once per month in a newspaper, magazine, website, or through a regular TV, radio, or podcast program serving the Boston area or a national outlet.
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Live in the Boston area and/or work for a Boston-based media outlet.
  • Be on an active press list for film screenings.
  • Review various mainstream, independent, documentary, non-English language, and classic films. One major thing we do is vote on films at year’s end and you need a good cross section.

Academic Exception:
Academics with a broad and established body of published film criticism may be considered for membership, provided they demonstrate a strong engagement with contemporary film criticism and make a good-faith effort to attend new releases. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Who Cannot Apply?

  • Individuals whose work is primarily features or interviews rather than film criticism.
  • Anyone employed by a film studio, distributor, exhibitor, publicity firm, or advertising agency within the past year.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following by April 30, 2025, to bostonsocietyfilmcritics@gmail.com:

  1. Cover Letter
    • Confirming that you meet the qualifications.
    • Listing the media outlets that have published your work.
    • A brief personal statement about your career in film criticism and why you want to be a BSFC member. 
  2. Five Film Reviews
    • Published within the past 12 months.
    • Provided as paywall-free links or attached in PDF format.

Application Process

  • The Membership Maven will review all applications to ensure they meet BSFC standards.
  • Applications will be presented to BSFC members for a vote.
  • Membership approval requires a 75% “yes” vote from active members
  • Applicants will be notified of the decision by Aug. 31, 2025.

Additional Notes

  • Applicants who do not meet the criteria or fail to submit all required materials will not be considered.
  • Applicants who do not obtain enough votes for membership may reapply in future years but can only apply a maximum of three times.
  • The BSFC reserves the right to refuse membership to any applicant.
